Flowers have long been a part of our history. Flowers were not only used as a symbol of love but as a symbol of hope, new beginnings and life. As we celebrate Easter, We at Flower shops in Makati would like to share with you different kinds of flowers, colors, cultures and celebrations performed during Easter.

Lilies

The most famous of all flowers is the Easter lily.  Mostly given as gifts or popularly called as Easter gifts.  The Easter lily has shiny, dark green leaves. The leaves are shaped like the head of a lance, or of a narrow oval shape tapering to a point at each end. Some describe it as lanceolate leaves which are around the central stout stem. It has large, fragrant, white trumpet-shaped flowers at top of leafy green stalk.

To help celebrate Easter, some christens have given special meanings to the famous Easter lily. Since Easter Lilies are often white they represent a sign of Purity and Goodness. According to books, this help Christians remember that Jesus was pure and perfect when he died on the Cross.

Not only that, their unique trumpet shaped blossoms symbolize life, purity, hope, and the spiritual meaning of Easter along with the promise of spring.

Lilies are often called the "White-Robed Apostles of Hope". Legend has it, that lilies, sprang from the ground where drops of Jesus' sweat fell to the ground during his final agony. According to others Lilies were discovered in the Garden of Gethsemane after Christ died on the cross. Because of this during the Easter season, catholic churches prepare their altars and decorate their crosses with Easter Lilies. This is to signify the rebirth and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal life.

In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus alludes to the beauty of the flowers, reminding his listeners that King Solomon, with all of his riches, was not dressed as beautifully as the lilies of the field. Legend holds medieval artists used the blossoms to signify womanhood and purity in paintings of the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel told Mary that she was to be the mother of Jesus. Folklore holds that visitors to the Virgin Mary's tomb found only a bed of lilies because her body went straight to heaven during the first three days after her death. Another legend says that lilies grew from Eve's tears of repentance when she left the Garden of Eden. Easter lilies and Madonna lilies symbolize virtue, innocence, hope and life, while commemorating the resurrection of Christ and the hope of eternal life in heaven.

Tulips

Actually, the tulip is the most popular of the spring-flowering bulbs, thought to be from Holland but originally from the Middle East. Tulips typically bear cup-shaped flowers in almost every color but true blue. Most have broad leaves that quickly fade away during summer. Tulips are a symbol of Easter and of new beginnings as well. White tulips stand for forgiveness and the purple ones represent royalty. Purple is the traditional color of Easter symbolizing union of love as well as repentance with pain. Purple is also a royal color of kings and nobility. Because, during ancient times, purple dye was so expensive, only the royalty, nobility and the wealthy could have it.

White tulips for forgiveness while the purple represent royalty. Both shades and both meanings play an important role in the themes of Religious Easter. This also includes love, belief and passion associated with the blooms.

Again Tulips bloom in spring making them one of the popular Easter flowers. Passion Flower

Passion Flower, also known as Passiflora is a symbol of Jesus Christ’s Passion and Cross. This includes the pain, sacrifice and hardship during his scourging, crowning with thorns, three nails and five wounds.

Around the 15th and 16th centuries, a Spanish Christian missionary was inspired with the passion flowers plant. They adopted its physical structure to represent our lord Jesus Christ’s last days. This is due to its uncanny physical structures. The story was integrated particularly to the numbers of its various flower parts, as symbols of the last days of Jesus and especially his crucifixion. The three stamens or stigmata represent the three nail wounds of Jesus or the Trinity of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit or the three crosses and the 5 anthers below them the 5 wounds (four by the nails and one by the lance).. The pointed tips of the leaves were made to reflect the Holy Lance. The tendrils represent the whips used in the religious beating of our lord Jesus Christ. The ten petals and sepals represent the ten faithful apostles. Not including Peter who denied Jesus at the third crow and Judas Iscariot, who made the kiss as a sign of betrayal to our lord jesus in exchange for 30 (thirty) pieces of silver. The flower’s radial filaments circle of petals represent the crown of thorns that Jesus wore, which can number more than a hundred and vary from flower to flower. The chalice-shaped ovary with its receptacle represents a hammer or the infamous Holy Grail. The blue and white colors of many species’ flowers represent Heaven and Purity.

Finally the passion flower normally last for about three days and could represent the three days our lord Jesus Christ has spent in his tomb. As time has passed and due to tradition, Passion flowers now have lots of different meanings for Easter for every culture but over the years and the passing of time, these flowers help Christians remember that our lord Jesus died on the Cross for us.

Roses

Roses have a lot of meaning to a lot of people. Even during Easter, roses have been made as a symbol to commemorate of Lord Jesus Christ. The petals of roses are legendary symbols of the wounds of Jesus before and during his crucifixion. The red color obviously represents the blood of Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus shed his blood for the forgiveness of sins, while white roses stand for purity and innocence of his act.

Easter Gifts and Candy

Did you know that Easter is not just of pain and sacrifice? It is also about resurrection, rebirth and forgiveness. in celebration of Easter came the Easter bunny and the Easter egg.  Easter eggs are decorated eggs, mostly painted or colored and are often given to celebrate Easter or springtime. Traditionally,  chicken eggs are painted or dyed, during modern times the popular substitute are chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery or sugar treats such as chocolate. Although eggs, in general, were a traditional symbol of fertility and rebirth, in Christianity, in terms of celebration of Easter or Eastertide, Easter eggs symbolizes the empty tomb of our lord Jesus Christ, for Christians, it is a reminder that Jesus rose from the grave, and that those who believe will also experience everlasting life.

The Easter Bunny is a symbol of rebirth. Since rabbits and hares give birth to large litters in the early spring, it’s understandable that the rabbit is the symbol of fertility and rebirth. The legend of the Easter Bunny with Easter eggs appears to have been brought to the United States by the Germans.  Based on German Tradition, the Easter Bunny was originally a pastry covered in chocolate. When the German immigrants came to the US, they brought this tradition with them. According to history the very first chocolate rabbit and chocolate egg made for public gifts was made in the 1900’s and both originated in Germany.

As Filipinos we admire and adhere to tradition. To celebrate tradition of Easter eggs and bunnies we have the following flowers and gifts
