Going back to our article what is Valentine’s Day? What are the origins of Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day, originated in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival or observance of Valentine’s Day, celebrates the coming of spring. During roman times, the original calendar consisted of 10 months beginning in spring with March. Thus the celebration that starts mid of February or re 14. The celebration includes fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. Other sources indicate that the matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar are coupled for the duration of the festival or longer.
Based on others sources and most of us believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to celebrate love and romance others also believe that it is the anniversary of St Valentine’s death or burial, which probably occurred around A.D. 270, others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.
To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. This part of distribution or slapping has been a caused of debate for many. Others say that this was a brutal fete. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them, simply because they believed this would make them fertile. So far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.
At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century.
To start with Valentine’s Day has an apostrophe and an s that show possession. So who is valentine?
In 313 A.D., Roman Emperor Constantine the Great legalized Christianity and ended Rome's persecution of Christians. In 380 A.D., Christianity becomes the OFFICIAL state religion of the Roman Empire. These actions not only enabled the teachings of Christianity to spread unhindered within the empire, it encouraged non-Christians to convert to the once-persecuted religion.
The pagans, however, who adopted Christianity as their religion did not entirely abandon the traditions and practices they held before their "conversion." One of these traditions brought into the church was the fertility celebration known as the Lupercalia, which eventually became the Valentine's holiday. According to sources the vestiges of superstition were not absolutely obliterated, and the festival of the Lupercalia, whose origin had preceded the foundation of Rome, was still celebrated under the reign of Anthemius.”
Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day as narrated by historians may have taken its name from 3 priests. The first one not in any particular order is a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness. Other accounts hold that it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, for whom the holiday was named, though it is possible the two saints were actually one person. Another common legend states that St. Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war. It is for this reason that his feast day is associated with love.
Valentine’s Day is very popular all over the world. To date, valentine’s days is celebrated in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia, Argentina, France, Mexico, and South Korea. In our country, the Philippines, we celebrate it by sending flowers and gifts, eating with family and friends and so much more.
